Nanyang Blossom

Impactful flavours from the Nanyang Ocean

Grilled abalone salad with caviar and pumpkin

For some reason, London has yet to have an upmarket Malaysian restaurant in London, despite there are so many trending Malaysian restaurants, like Laksamania and Sambal Shiok. Nanyang Bloosom appears to attempt to change that. Located in Knightsbridge with Harrods just around the corner, Nanyang Blossom is a brand new restaurant by chef patron Daren Liew who was the head chef at the short-lived Duddells London and Blue Jasmine in Southhampton. Nanyang Blossom focuses on the rich flavours from the South China Sea, using plenty of spices and herbs to create an aromatic yet contemporary taste, and the menu itself contains plenty of upmarket ingredients, from crab, and lobster to Chilian seabass and Japanese wagyu.

Chilean seabass, turmeric spices and ginger

For my visit, I opted for a selection of mains from its alc menu. A grilled piece of Chilean seabass was blessed with some really bold turmeric and spices taste, yet somehow worked well with the sweet taste of the fish, it was a dish that got my tastebud dancing. The steamed prawns in yellow wine and egg white is the kind of dish I always have time for, as it offers a floral, umami note that works so well for seafood. My dish however contained a prawn that wasn't so fresh, while the other 3 were fine, so a little inconsistent there. What I really enjoyed was the Nyonya fried rice served in a clay pot. It had a mild smoky seafood aroma thanks to the chopped prawns, lobster and octopus, all cooked just right. The robust flavour with a soft heat was a real delight.

Josper grilled Baba chicken

Nanyang Blossom has something really interesting going on. Nowhere in London is doing anything similar right now. It is still early days so more refinement and fine-tuning would improve things going forward. But based on my visit, I can see great potential as it delivered so much powerful and colorful taste, with the use of spices not overwhelming the fresh ingredients, showcasing the kitchen team's skill. I would return for sure.
