Katei Ryori Sundays

Nestled in the heart of Mayfair, Niju brings an elegant blend of traditional Japanese cuisine and modern sophistication to London’s culinary scene. I visited in Autumn, and I was delighted with its food offering overall, especially in the seafood department. Since then, Niji has come up with a Sunday lunch menu aimed at sharing, pricing at £65 with a selection of cold dishes for starters, grilled meat for the main and a dessert. It is more or less the greatest hit of its regular ALC menu but at a much more reasonable price.

The sushi from Niju is solid, and the fatty tuna had a melting texture as expected, topped with caviar and seasoned with soy sauce to uplift the elegant umami tone. Out of all the grilled meat, I enjoyed the Cornish lamb culet the best, it had a soft charred note and the meat was cooked well, seasoned nicely with miso. The ending was a matcha tea fondant, and gosh it was the best dish from the lunch. The melting lava of tea and chocolate was comforting with a lovely floral aroma, and the rich creamy milky ice cream worked like magic together, the perfect ending.

Dining at Mayfair is undeniably a splurge, but Niju's Sunday lunch offers surprisingly great value. The prices don't reflect near enough in the quality of the ingredients and the care put into every aspect of the experience. You are getting fatty tuna, caviar, wagu beef for £65... unheard of in the whole of London. Niju's Sunday menu is a gem and perhaps the best value for money Sunday lunch in Mayfair. With its flawless execution of traditional dishes, modern flair, and impeccable service, Niju sets the standard for Japanese dining in London.
