Avillez's empire

BBQ Carabineros |
Bairro is a mini restaurant hub by the most famous Portuguese chef José Avillez, the very first chef that landed two Michelin stars in Portugal and now runs a handful of restaurants across the nation. It appears he is everywhere, from casual concepts to fine dining venues. Located in Lisbon, Bairro is perhaps his most ambitious project, a dining space house 4 restaurants, with Pateo, the seafood concept taking the central stage. The menu is big, with a selection of seafood dishes based on traditional Portuguese recipes but with an international twist, so don't be surprise to see kimchee or curry.

Lobster and shrimps rice |
The grilled giant red shrimp was the perfect start, grilled to the perfect level with a lovely charred seafood aroma. The shrimp was so sweet and its head juice, along with the house special sauce that was loaded with garlic and spices created such a rich umami taste. The main event of lobster and shrimp rice was rich and buttery, the lobster claw was moist and the rice absorbed all the amazing flavour from the lovely seafood stock, the only downside was that I found the shrimps was a touch overcooked. The custard mille-feuille had the essence of the sweet and creamy pastéis de nata, layered with crispy puff pastry, as it was a rich dessert, it would have been good if it came with a side of vanilla ice cream to balance off the sweetness.

Pateo as a seafood restaurant was solid and I enjoyed the massive open space setting, which made it casual and relaxing. However, with a big-name chef's branding comes with a premium price tag, for a 3-course meal with a drink, it costed me to a level where you can have a Michelin star meal elsewhere. Fresh seafood is not cheap but Pateo's price tag is a touch too high for my liking.
