Legado

Regional Spanish food in the City

Skate Wing Tortilla, Mojo Verde

Legado in Shoreditch is a brand new  Spanish restaurant from chef Nieves Barragán Mohacho, who already has a Michelin-starred outlet, Sabor in central London. What makes Legado truly compelling is its menu: a journey through lesser-known and regionally specific Spanish flavours and techniques, which delights both the Spanish food aficionado and the curious Londoner. There’s a sense that Barragán Mohacho has taken what she learned in her years at Barrafina and Sabor, and aimed here not simply for repetition but expansion: of scale, of repertoire, of ambition.

Chickpeas, Morcilla de Burgos

Grilled Octopus, Smoked Paprika

Arroz Campero Iberico

The rice selection of Legado is very strong. The Iberico pork rice, made with mushroom stock, had a wonderful texture. It was creamy and deeply savory. The weak dish for me was the house special Segovian suckling pig. It arrives with crisp, blistered skin that shatters under the fork, but the meat was dry, and it was just nowhere as good as many of the Asador houses I have encountered in Spain, yet Legado is charging more than double. What impressed me was the courgette tempura, which arrived crisp and featherlight.

Beyond the pig, where Legado doesn’t quite work for me, was the sheer richness of many dishes and the weight of the indulgence; some would find it over-seasoned with salt (and too many deep-fry elements). Price is another factor; many dishes are tapa size but costing close to the £20 mark, a meal with wine would set you back to a 3-digit figure easily, but you might still go hungry. Having said that, Legado is one of a kind and the cooking is for sure very accomplished. It doesn’t just aim to be another good Spanish restaurant in London; it aims to shift expectations. For those willing to lean into its lushness, it delivers. In sum: Legado is a major achievement for Nieves Barragán Mohacho, and a vibrant, sometimes overwhelming, always thoughtful tribute to the many faces of Spain.
