Osteria Angelina

Fusion fun but far from perfect

Sicilian Red Prawns, Tentsuyu & Crispy Rice

Stepping into Osteria Angelina feels like entering a sleek warehouse-loft that has been tenderly reworked as a high-end “osteria” on the edge of the City and Shoreditch. On the plate, the menu at Osteria Angelina unabashedly brings together Italian traditions and Japanese technique: “itameshi” fusion. I have visited once already, and I felt the quality warranted a return.

Hokkaido Milk Bread, Jam & Burnt Honey Butter

Tagliolini, Tuna, Mentaiko & Kombu Cured Caviar

The Hokkaido milk bread with kumquat jam and burnt honey butter is deceptively simple, yet rich in flavour — soft, slightly sweet, and built to prep your palate for the journey ahead. The red prawn with crispy rice, demonstrates that this isn’t fusion for the sake of novelty, but a thoughtful blending of flavours. The raw textures, the clean edges of the prawn, worked in harmony with Japanese vinegar. The dish of tortelloni with truffle and kombu is a standout: silky pockets of pasta folded with a rich umami tone. I had the grilled Blythburgh pork chop, and sadly, this time was a let-down; the meat was cooked right, but the skin wasn't crispy enough, chewy to the point that it was unpleasant.

Grilled Blythburgh Pork Chop

Tongue & Wasabi Mustard

Although the pork was a let-down and service can be sloppy at times (kicked your chair by mistake since limited space in the dining room), Osteria Angelina is a compelling addition to London’s dining landscape. It takes the fusion of Japanese and Italian cooking—often a risky proposition—and makes it feel coherent, generous and fun. The space has atmosphere and the food has character. For a night out where you want to lean into flavour, craftsmanship and something unusual, this restaurant is well worth booking. Just be mindful of the pricing and the uncomfortable chairs!
